Interview with Jaap, 53 years old

Why did you decide to start with Neurotherapy?

About 4 years ago my health was in a bad shape. An autoimmune disorder afflicting my thyroid gland affected my entire system in such a way that my hormonal system, adrenal glands and pituitary started malfunctioning as well. Also heart problems made me so tired that sometimes even walking was too much of an effort.
My search for recovery began with many practitioners among which homeopaths, acupuncturists, healers and psychotherapists. It brought me many insights, but too little physical results. Next I ended up in the AMC (University Medical Center in Amsterdam) at professor Wiegersma his department. After extensive research his diagnosis was anything but comforting: an autoimmune disorder for which no treatment was available. Life expectancy was uncertain, somewhere between six and twelve months.
Not long after that someone told me about neurofeedback. When I registered for treatment at the NCH I was told there was a waiting list of one year. I put my name on the list anyway. Much to my surprise after 2 months I received a call: "You can come". Apparently quite a few people on the list were on holiday and therefore did not answer their call.

What is your experience as far as your neurotherapy training programme is concerned?

The intake was impressive. The evaluation of the QEEG was incredibly accurate, the symptoms I had to deal with were mapped to the point. Especially the openness and space I felt in the approach were very comforting. We started training. The combination of attention, my wish to recover and the training worked well. After having trained for three months I went back to the professor at the AMC. Again they did extensive blood tests and during the examination the professor thought that mistakes had been made because all the blood test results came back normal. I knew enough. After three months of neurofeedback training my disorder had vanished. I continued training for another 5 months, this time with a less intensive programme. I did this because I was still quite weak and my body needed time to recuperate.

How is your health now, three years later?

I never had a relapse again. I can work fulltime and recently I have become a father of a wonderful daughter.

Interview with Ria, 49 years old

Neurofeedback, what made you do it?

After a heavy and failed IVF procedure in an attempt to have children with my husband I slipped into a dark depression. The added hormones heavily derailed my body and spirit. Anti-depressants lifted me temporarily from the deepest pit but since I had no intention to swallow those pills a single day longer than absolutely necessary, I quit after 5 months. But I was still a long way from a real balance; actually, I had the feeling I could slip back into this pit anytime.
At about that time I read an article in Ode magazine about neurofeedback at the NCH. It made me curious but it raised many questions too. After souding my loved ones out on the subject and some soul searching I decided to get into touch with the Neurotherapie Centrum Hilversum.

What is your experience as far as your neurofeedback training programme is concerned?

In the first meeting a QEEG was made and I filled out a questionnaire. After evaluating the QEEG the therapists were able to describe my complaints with an amazing accuracy. I decided to start training on the spot. After only 20 sessions I felt relaxed, in balance and completely freed from the obsessive thoughts I had had before starting. Not only had I found myself again but also a better version of myself. At some distant point in my childhood had I felt so good, so relaxed and I had found that back. In addition to this I have to say that the neurofeedback team in Hilversum showed an unequalled commitment to the cause. They really take time for you and listen with genuine interest; the treatment is truly customized, geared to your personal wishes, queries and complaints.

How is your health now?

After the menopause in 2007 part of my old complaints resurfaced because of severe hormonal shifts. Now I knew where to go! After a number of sessions the complaints diminished. Frankly, I have to admit that I happily take every opportunity to direct people to the Neurotherapie Centrum Hilversum.

Letter from Merel, 23 years old

Before I started with neurofeedback I was going through a rough period. I was in a complicated situation, I suffered from a stress disorder and it was just too much for me to get my life organized. I had been on (prescribed) Ritalin and Prozac for years because of ADD, I could not find my bearings, from my childhood onwards my home situation had been difficult, I was over-sensitive to everything around me. Amidst all this, difficulties were accumulating one on top of the another, I had reached the limit. I was unable to see any horizon at that point in time. From the minute I crossed the threshhold at the Neurotherapie Centrum Hilversum, I knew I was in the right place. I started training and slowly but surely found my way back. Neurofeedback brought me more stability, ability to concentrate and peace.
Neurotherapy should be available to everyone, especially for people suffering from AD(H)D. After 2 years I still feel stable and peaceful and I stopped taking medication which makes me feel even better. I owe you so much!
